About Sao Lao Thai Café
Serving up authentic Thai and Lao food.
Located at 5013 N Shepherd Dr, Houston, TX 77018, Sao Lao Thai Café operates as a thai restaurant serving Houston in Texas. This page gathers the practical details people usually look for before visiting: where it is, how to reach it, when it opens and how customers rate it. Google also lists it under laotian restaurant, which is worth knowing if you are comparing several options in the area.
Portion sizes and pricing swing widely across this group, from a $10 lunch bowl to a multi-course tasting menu at an upscale sushi counter, so checking recent reviews and photos is more useful than the price range alone. In Houston, dinner reservations for popular izakaya, hot pot and Korean BBQ spots fill up on Friday and Saturday nights, so booking ahead or arriving at opening is worth it. Many restaurants across Texas run daily lunch specials on weekdays that are not listed on the dinner menu, so it is worth asking. Halal, vegetarian and gluten-free options vary a lot by kitchen; call ahead if you have a dietary restriction rather than assuming the menu will note it.
The business lists hours on 1 day of the week. On most of those days it is open 11 AM–8 PM. It is closed on Sunday. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. The listed phone number is (713) 485-0107. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. More information is available on its website, saolaothaicafehtx.com.
On Google it holds a rating of 4.7 out of 5 from 673 reviews, which is a strong result for a thai restaurant in Houston and suggests consistent service.
Houston is in Texas, in the South, where summers are hot and humid, winters are short, and severe storms in spring are a fact of life; businesses run air conditioning most of the year and many open early to beat the heat. US addresses list the street number and name, then the city, state abbreviation and ZIP code, and Houston follows the same pattern; a suite or apartment number such as Ste 200 refers to a unit inside the building. The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

Such a great spot! I really liked the green Thai tea—it was super refreshing. The Lao sausage was really good, and we got lucky because they had their last order of beef jerky left. It was so yummy and definitely worth getting. The soups - love the broth and the portion of it! The owner was so friendly, and it was nice being able to talk with her in our native language. She gave us some great recommendations, and everything she suggested was a hit. The place itself has a modern, cozy vibe. I loved the decor, and the playlist made the whole experience even better. Overall, the food, service, and atmosphere were all amazing. Can't wait to come back!

Overall mid. Papaya salad was overseasoned and veggies too soft. Red curry had too much eggplant, but overall ok. The boat noodle with slow cooked beef was the best dish (and apparently also recognized by some outlets). Not very authentic flavors

My brother and I wanted to stop and get some lunch and we just so happen to find this place only 15 minutes away from home. The service here is so personal you already feel like family from the minute you step in the doors. The food came out in literally under 10 minutes and the portions are HUGE! Flavor profile is insane. We got the Lao Chicken Wings which came with a homemade chili oil sauce to dip them in 100/10 and we also got the Thai Red Curry which was some of the BEST curry I’ve had in a dish in a while. 1000/10. The owner is so sweet and FUNNY!! 🫶🏻🫶🏻 we will back back VERY soon!

We had a great dinner here with friends. We tried about 75 percent of the items on their menu. We were pleased with the service and the food. Our favorite dishes were the crispy chicken wings, crispy fried rice, drunken noodles, tom yum soup, mango sticky rice, and basil beef. Medium spice was great for me. My friends found it a tad too spicy. So if you’re not used to spice, choose Mild. If you like a little heat then choose medium spice level.

Absolutely delicious Thai food. Food came out quickly and fresh. Drunken noodles were some of the best I’ve ever had, and the vegetarian fried rice was really good as well (tofu could use a little more flavor/seasoning). Service was friendly and attentive. It’s a very popular place at lunch and not a lot of seating so you may have to wait a bit if you want to dine-in. Definitely come check out this neighborhood gem.
